3-18-08 "What will they say?"

Greetings Internet Campus,

Yesterday we talked about "why" to get baptized...today we're going to look at another baptism question..."what will they say?"

Many people are concerned with what family or friends might say if they decide to get baptized...after all who knows you better than they do? They supposedly know the "real" you...the "sinful" you...the you that has "no business acting holy and stuff..."

Sound familiar?

Sure it does. If you've already been baptized, there more than likely was that thought...what will my kids think? What will my parents (who had me christened) say? What will my friends say when they find out I "found Jesus". Here's my question to you... who are you getting baptized for?

When we make the decision to get baptized, we are following Christ's example and telling Him that we want to live a life of obedience. That's it. Been baptized as an infant? You are completing what your parents started. Afraid of what your kids might think? You are setting a wonderful example of a strong faith and obedience to God. Wonder what your friends might think? Does it matter? If you are a Christ-follower and your friends don't support you in your growing relationship with God...it might be time to evaluate who you are doing life with.

Our decision to get baptized is very important if we are to avoid capping our spiritual growth. God has called all of us to step out into that water after we make the decision to follow Him with our lives...don't let the opinions of others keep you dry.

Write it Down: How much does the opinion of another effect your walk with Christ? What is more important...acceptance from others or obedience to God?

See, that wasn't so tough..more tomorrow!

Pastor Brian,

MAN you SO nailed it with this post! I have done a lot of reflecting this past week about my step in baptism last Easter at the beach. I can SO remember feeling EXACTLY like this! But I remember Pastor Troy and you too.... telling everyone that IF we made the decision to be baptized.... filled out that form.... to get ready for the attack... feelings just like those you speak of in this post. THATs what kept me focused and kept me totally aware that these feelings however real they felt to me in the moment were really just satan attacking. After all, keeping people from salvation and baptism is his #1 priority.

I think your post will remind people of that... and allow them to FOCUS on God and take the step.
